11-year-old Albert Lea child dies in car/bicycle crash

On Aug. 11, 2023, at 5:13 p.m., the Albert Lea Police Department and Fire Rescue were dispatched to a car versus bicycle crash at the intersection of Bridge Avenue and Marshall Street. Units responded along with Mayo Ambulance.

Albert Lea police officers found the bicyclist lying in the southbound lane of Bridge Avenue. The victim was unresponsive and officers began life-saving measures with the assistance of Albert Lea Fire Rescue. The unresponsive juvenile was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System-Albert Lea where he was declared deceased at 5:52 p.m. The child was identified as Ayden Michael Brackey, 11 years of age, from Albert Lea.

Brackey had been struck by a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Viola Marian Matson, 89 years of age, from Albert Lea. Matson had been preceding southbound on Bridge Avenue with a green light when the westbound bicycle crossed in front of her vehicle and was struck.

No impairment was detected and no criminal charges are being sought.
