COUNCIL APPROVES PLAT CHANGE FOR POTENTIAL GROCERY: Plans for a grocery at the corner of East Main Street and Blake Avenue took a step forward March 10 when the Albert Lea City Council approved subdividing a 10-acre property into smaller lots. The private property, known as the Dress Addition, offers high visibility and traffic with Wal-Mart, strip malls and other businesses nearby. Aldi, a discount supermarket chain, is listed as the developer on site plans. City councilors expressed excitement and appreciation for the potential development. The city and partners have worked to recruit an additional grocery since Marketplace closed in 2020. The plat change also included designating an additional 27 feet along Blake Avenue as public right-of-way for future extension of the Blazing Star State Trail to connect the shopping area to local trails. Todayโ€™s full-time crew is training on bailing out a window. For training purposes, there is a safety line attached to the firefighter. We train on two methods of escaping out a window in the event that we have no other option. One is down a ladder as shown here and a second is with our bail out kits - a rope configuration and descent device - that we keep in our turnout gear. (Pictured in the comment section. Facebook wonโ€™t let us post videos and photos together) ... See MoreSee Less

Did you know that we are the ones who go out on the cityโ€™s rental inspections? Yesterday alone we inspected 26 units. We check properties for any necessary corrections, and it also gives us a chance to educate tenants, managers and landlords on how to prevent unnecessary emergencies and itโ€™s an opportunity to see more properties to pre-plan what to do in the event of an emergency. ...
