Man arrested after stabbing in Albert Lea

At 10:25 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, a reporting person contacted Freeborn County Dispatch indicating his 23-year-old brother was stabbed in the leg with a knife by their uncle. Albert Lea Police Department, Fire Rescue and Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service responded to 1014 Garfield Ave. Upon arrival, responders located the 23-year-old male victim outside the residence and administered first aid. A tourniquet was applied to the victim, and the victim was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System-Albert Lea for apparent non-life-threatening injuries.

The reporting party was transported by law enforcement to the emergency room where his mother also responded.

The South Central Drug Investigation Unit Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team was requested.

A perimeter was established and officers began attempts to contact the suspect who was believed to be inside the residence. Numerous voice attempts over a squad car’s PA system were made, along with attempting to gain the suspect’s attention with the squad car’s siren. Despite all the attempts made, no contact was achieved. Due to past violations, the suspect was wearing an electronic ankle bracelet that showed he was in the residence.

School District 241, Grace Lutheran Church, and Thorne Crest Senior Living Community were advised of the isolated incident. There was no indication of firearms available to the suspect.

Upon SWAT’s arrival, the team enhanced an inner security perimeter.

A safety paramount extraction plan was developed and executed by SWAT. After breaching the door at 1:28 p.m., and providing additional commands, the suspect, Efren Estrada, age 24, was safely apprehended at 1:30 p.m. Estrada was transported to the Freeborn County Adult Detention Center and is awaiting a felony second-degree assault charge.
