Referendum on rec facilities set for April 9

In a special election on Tuesday, April 9, voters in Albert Lea will decide the following ballot question. To vote in the referendum, you must be a registered voter who lives within Albert Lea city limits. You may register to vote the day of the referendum (instructions below).

INSTRUCTIONS TO VOTERS: To vote for a question, fill in the oval next to the word “Yes” on that question. To vote against a question, fill in the oval next to the word “No” on that question.

CITY QUESTION 1:

ISSUING BONDS FOR THE BETTERMENT OF CERTAIN RECREATIONAL FACILITIES

Shall the City of Albert Lea be authorized to issue its general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $9,800,000 to provide funds to finance the betterment of the City’s Arena, Theater, Aquatic Center, and Splash Pad Restrooms?

   YES

   NO

BY VOTING “YES” ON THIS BALLOT QUESTION, YOU ARE VOTING FOR A PROPERTY TAX INCREASE.

Impact to taxpayers

  • The cost to individual taxpayers would depend on their property values. For a home valued at $100,000, the additional cost would be $47.50 per year or less than $4 per month under current tax conditions.

How to register to vote

  • Online: Visit the Minnesota Secretary of State website to register online.
  • In person: Download a paper form or pick up a registration form and return at the Auditor-Treasurer’s Office, Freeborn County Government Center, 411 South Broadway Ave. Return the completed form to the same location.
  • Election Day: Register to vote at your polling place on Election Day or early voting locations before Election Day.

When and where to vote

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, at the following locations. The City of Albert Lea is divided into 6 wards.

Ward 6: Assembly of God Church, 1540 South Shore Drive

Absentee voting

The Freeborn County Auditor-Treasurer’s Office oversees absentee voting.

Absentee ballots are now available for the April 9 referendum. The Auditor-Treasurer’s Office must receive a completed absentee ballot application before issuing a ballot to a voter. Absentee ballots must be returned to the Auditor-Treasurer’s Office no later than 8 p.m. on April 9 to be counted. Mail or bring ballots to the Freeborn County Government, 411 S. Broadway Ave., Albert Lea, MN  56007.

Voters may also cast an absentee ballot in person at the Freeborn County Auditor-Treasurer’s Office, 411 South Broadway Ave., Albert Lea. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except legal holidays. Also, the office will be open the Saturday before the referendum from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for absentee voting.
