Firefighter forges art and history

ArtWalk Albert Lea, a community initiative housed under the Convention and Visitors Bureau, is turning the Blue Zones Walkway and the downtown area into an open-air gallery, showcasing the talents of local artists. Among the pieces, one stands out for its unique blend of history and craftsmanship: a miniature suit of horse armor crafted by Albert Lea Firefighter Chris Harveaux in his off-duty hours.

Harboring a love for the medieval period, particularly its armor, and unable to afford authentic pieces, he decided to forge his own.

“I started with scrap metal and scavenged leather from old boots,” he explains.

This initial venture led to requests from others, and by 2001, Harveaux was selling his creations across the country and even internationally. His focus primarily rests on gauntlets, but he’s also crafted full suits for adults and children, and even armor for horses and dogs.

This piece, titled “Given the choice, I choose to be a dragon” sits proudly in front of the Albert Lea Art Center, 101 S. Broadway Ave.

The piece, proudly standing in front of the Albert Lea Art Center, 101 S. Each piece is held together by rivets and all the forming was done with hammers, chisels and an anvil.

ArtWalk Albert Lea is dedicated to beautifying public spaces, supporting local artists, and fostering an appreciation of art. The group plans 11 sculptures for the walkway and downtown. Below are a few of the sculptures already in place. For more information, see the ArtWalk Albert Lea website or follow the group on Facebook.
